Come listen to Dr. Tom Cuchta speak about his upcoming REU on Thursday, 3/31 at 11A.M. in Eberly 251. The REU is open to majors outside of mathematics. Please see the abstract below.

Abstract: "Discrete and Continuous Analysis in Appalachia" is an NSF-funded summer mathematics research experience for undergraduates hosted by Fairmont State University 6 June 2022 to 29 July 2022. In this talk, we shall discuss all aspects of the program, including the stipend, the paid housing in FSU's dorms, the summer schedule, and some sample research projects. Undergraduates who are US Citizens or Permanent Residents and who will not have a bachelor's degree by the time the program begins are eligible to apply!

The program will begin with one week of instruction in LaTeX typesetting, the Python programming language, and the underlying mathematics of the sample projects: time scales calculus. After this, the participants will break into research groups in one of the following three areas: special functions, control theory, and probability theory for further instruction. Following this, participant groups will develop and work on their projects in conjunction with the involved faculty. Sample projects from these areas include (but are not limited to!) studying generalized hypergeometric series, linear quadratic regulators, and the Kalman filter.
