Dr. Matthew J. Price

Department of Mathematics and Physical Sciences

Upon completion of his doctoral studies at the University of Utah, Dr. Price joined a small start-up biotechnology company that worked on creating novel drug formulations using encapsulation molecules called cyclodextrins. After almost three years, he began to pursue academic positions and landed a visiting assistant professor position at Earlham College. The following year, in 2005, he joined the faculty at Cal U in the Chemistry and Physics Department.

He is an active member of the Society of Analytical Chemists of Pittsburgh (SACP) and has served as a board member of the Student affiliates organization and National Chemistry Week events over the past years. Linked with the SACP student affiliates, he is also a long-time advisor to the Cal U Chemistry Club. He has also recently served on the Cal U Faculty Professional Development committee (FPDC) through the Technology subcommittee. He currently serves on the General Education committee the past four years.

In addition to these professional activities, he participates in the Boy Scouts of America program as well as other regional youth organizations.

Research Interests

He is mainly interested in exploring structure-activity relationships between various chromic organic materials, including spiropyrans and anils. He also continues to be interested in creating selective molecular formulation materials using cyclic carbohydrate derivatives.

Research Projects Including Students

  • A-Ring Modification of Spiropyrans through Fisher Rearrangment of Aniline Derivatives
  • D- Ring Derivatives of Spiropyrans and Photochromic Analysis
  • Synthesis and Characterization of Anil Derivative Libraries
  • Selective Oxidation of Cyclodextrin's Primary Face

Service-learning Projects

Dr. Price participates as an instructor during summer camps on the Cal U campus, including the TECH program that allows middle school young women to explore STEM careers.
